Spoonie Chat 8-27-2014: Self Care

image

@DawnMGibson hosts #SpoonieChat each Wednesday night from 8-10PM EDT.

Spoonie,

This week’s chat was inspired by A Not-To-Do List for the Chronically Ill. This article does a great job exploring the social and emotional pitfalls many of us might fall into. I like how Toni Berhard flipped the “To Do” list on it’s head to expose areas where anybody with chronic illness could cultivate self kindness.

Primary Questions

Tonight’s  is about  as . How we talk to & about ourselves is fundamental to how we feel & manage our illness.

can easily turn negative as our bodies fail to cooperate. But body, illness, & self are NOT the same.

Q4: #Spoonie, do you find yourself apologizing for the consequences of your illness? How/Why?  #SpoonieChat

#Spoonie, I find it helpful to make it clear that illness is NOT a choice. #SpoonieChat

: It helps to remind myself & others that I really WANT to be there, even if I physically can’t do what was planned.

Q5: #Spoonie, are you open to seeing your illness as theft/intrusion rather than a personal failing? #SpoonieChat

Q6: #Spoonie, do you find yourself glorifying your life before illness or before it worsened? #SpoonieChat

: Sometimes, it feels like the rear view mirror is a trap specifically designed to catch a

: It’s so tempting to look back at the past frozen in place. But even the past is not a perfect version of history.

: We all know story of a departed person/pet that becomes more glorious with each telling. It can be same for the past..

#Spoonie, it’s highly possible that our future would have changed without illness. #SpoonieChat

Q7: Where are you in the #Spoonie grieving process? #SpoonieChat

: Grieving involves letting go of old expectations of how things are “supposed to be”. It’s NOT the same as giving up.
: Grieving comes in fits & starts. It’s important to go at your own pace. It’s your own journey.
: It’s impossible to know how things actually would have turned out, but you can still make a life for yourself.

The #Spoonie’s grief is valid even when the disability was present from birth. #SpoonieChat

Q8: #Spoonie, do you find yourself using bad names/ insults for your ill self? What could replace it? #SpoonieChat

Q9: #Spoonie, how often do you say “yes” when your body means “no”: sometimes, really often, or all the time? #SpoonieChat

Q10: #Spoonie, do you feel comfortable shutting folks down when they’re nosy about your health: yes, no, or sometimes? #SpoonieChat

1. It’s your choice to make your health as public or private as you want.
2. You can change your mind at any time.
3. It’s nice to be understood, but it’s NOT your job to convince folks that you’re really sick or deserve respect.
4. It’s ok to draw boundaries about discussing your health, treatments, finances, or reproductive arrangements.

Spoonie Chat Questions 8-20-2014: Health Intentions

image

@DawnMGibson hosts Spoonie Chat each Wednesday night on Twitter, from 8-10 PM EDT and anytime on the Spoonie Chat page

This week Spoonie Chat is taking a second look at revisiting our health intentions for 2014. I don’t mean New Year’s resolutions or unrealistic restrictive restrictions that set us up for failure. A thoughtful self-care lifestyle can help with the chronic illness grind. It’s my hope that we can bridge the gap between doable solutions and the hopelessly frozen feeling chronic illness can bring.

Peter Bregman’s article Consider Not Setting Goals in 2013, explains that adopting areas of focus might be more helpful  than goals or resolutions. To Bregman, goals are too focused on preset outcomes. Areas of focus are about deeper motivations and how to spend time and energy.

In January, we worked to uncover a few areas of health focus for 2014. How’s all that going?

A few things to consider:

1. The Americans With Disabilities Act defines a disability as something that interferes with a major life activity.

2. How has your stress awareness and management been going?

3. What role do your relationships play in your health status?

4. What areas of your health would you like to improve?

5. What changes, if any, would you like to see in your diet?

6. Can you foresee any changes in how your fatigue is managed?
